This collection is hand-thrown on the wheel using the local red earthenware clay that is fired in the traditional Latvian wood-fired kiln outdoors. It goes through a special type of firing called reduction and the kiln is sealed closed at the end, so all the smoke penetrates the ceramic turning it from red to black. The inside of the pot is slipped white and glazed with a food-safe glaze, but the outside is polished with wool cloth and after the firing polished again with hot beeswax thus making it waterproof. The patterns are incised with a sharp pin; this is called the sgraffito technique.
